Moving in Dubai comes with its own vocabulary — Ejari, NOC, DEWA, service-elevator slots. Here is each term explained in plain English, with a link to the service it affects.

Ejari: Ejari is Dubai's official tenancy-registration system, run by the Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA). Registering your tenancy contract with Ejari makes it legally recognised and is required to connect DEWA utilities, get a residence-visa, enrol children in school, and — relevant when you move — to obtain a move-in permit from many buildings. Your landlord or agent usually registers it, producing an Ejari certificate with a contract number. When you move into a new Dubai home, building management commonly asks for a copy of your Ejari before issuing a moving permit.
Move Permit (NOC): A move permit — often called an NOC (No Objection Certificate) — is written permission from a building's management or owners' association to carry furniture in or out. Most Dubai apartment towers and gated communities require one for both move-out and move-in. To get it you typically submit your Ejari or tenancy contract, a copy of your ID, sometimes a refundable security deposit cheque, and 24–72 hours' notice, then book a service-elevator slot. Requirements and fees vary by developer, so confirm with your building before your move date.
DEWA Transfer: DEWA is the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority. A DEWA transfer is the process of closing your electricity and water account at your old home and opening one at your new address, so utilities are live when you arrive. You settle the final bill and request a move-out at the old property, then activate a new connection using your Ejari, Emirates ID and a deposit. It is separate from the physical move, but worth timing alongside it so you are not without power on moving day.
Service Elevator Booking: In Dubai's high-rise towers, moves must use the service (goods) elevator, not the passenger lifts — and management books it for a set time window, often with padding installed to protect the walls. Slots can be limited at month-end and may need reserving days ahead, sometimes with a deposit. A missed or overrun slot can stall a move for hours, which is why professional movers confirm the booking and lead time with building management before scheduling your crew.
Free Zone Office Relocation: A free zone office relocation is a business move into, out of, or between one of Dubai's free zones (such as DMCC, DIFC, Dubai Internet City or JAFZA). Each free zone authority has its own building-access rules, security clearance, insurance and out-of-hours moving requirements, and often needs advance notice and gate passes for the moving vehicles and crew. Planning around these rules — and around minimising business downtime — is what separates a smooth corporate move from a disruptive one.
Export Packing: Export packing is the heavier-duty packing standard used for international moves, where goods are handled many more times and travel by sea or air. It uses double-wall cartons, custom timber crates for fragile and high-value items, moisture barriers and corner protection, all documented on a detailed inventory. Good export packing is built to survive port handling, container loading and long transit — and to satisfy customs and marine-insurance requirements at the destination — which ordinary local-move packing is not designed for.
FIDI / FAIM: FIDI is the global alliance of professional international-moving companies, and FAIM is its quality standard, independently audited. When an international mover is FIDI-FAIM accredited, it signals verified competence in export packing, documentation, insurance and destination-agent coordination. For a Dubai household shipping goods abroad, choosing movers who work to FIDI standards — directly or through a FIDI partner network — reduces the risk of damage, customs delays or lost items on a move you cannot easily supervise from the other side.
Bill of Lading: A bill of lading (B/L) is the shipping document a carrier issues for goods moved by sea, and an air waybill is its air-freight equivalent. It lists what is being shipped, from where to where, and acts as both a receipt and a contract of carriage — and it is one of the documents customs and your destination agent need to release your shipment. On an international move your relocation company prepares and tracks these documents so your container or air shipment clears smoothly.
Customs Clearance: Customs clearance is the process of getting your household goods legally admitted through customs — out of the UAE and into your destination country (or vice versa). It requires the right paperwork: a detailed valued inventory, passport and visa copies, the bill of lading or air waybill, and destination-specific forms. Rules on duties, restricted items and required documents vary widely by country. An experienced international mover, working with a destination agent, prepares these correctly so your shipment is not held or charged unexpected duty.
Custom Crating: Custom crating is building a made-to-measure timber crate around a single high-value or awkward item — a piano, a marble tabletop, a chandelier, fine art or an antique — so it cannot shift or absorb impact in transit. The item is first wrapped and cushioned, then enclosed in a rigid crate cut to its exact dimensions. It is the standard for specialised handling because ordinary boxes and blankets cannot protect irreplaceable pieces through loading, stacking and long-distance transport.
Storage-in-Transit: Storage-in-transit is short-term storage of your belongings during a move — for example when there is a gap between handing back one home and getting keys to the next, or while an international shipment waits for a vessel. Goods are inventoried, kept in a secure, often climate-controlled facility, and released when you are ready. In Dubai's summer heat, climate control matters for anything wooden, leather or electronic. It is billed separately from the move, usually per month.
Moving Deposit (Security Cheque): Many Dubai buildings ask for a refundable moving deposit — often a security cheque — before issuing a move permit. It covers any accidental damage to shared areas like lift interiors, lobbies and corridors during the move, and is returned after management inspects and finds no damage. Amounts vary by building. Using professional movers who pad lifts and protect common areas is the practical way to make sure that deposit comes back in full.
