The 8-Week Moving Checklist for Dubai Households

Start by fixing a moving date, or at least a target week. If you have flexibility, avoid the last few days of the month — that's when the highest volume of Dubai tenancy contracts turn over, so movers, cleaners, and even parking permits for loading are hardest to book on short notice.

Get quotes from at least two or three moving companies now, not the week before. A real quote should follow a walkthrough of your home (in person or over video call) so the mover can see your actual inventory, not just a room count. This is also the point to start a serious declutter — every item you don't move is one less thing to pack, carry, and pay to transport.

Begin sorting room by room into keep, sell, donate, and discard piles. Dubai has active resale communities (community WhatsApp groups, classifieds apps, consignment shops) that make it easy to offload furniture and appliances you won't take with you — starting early gives buyers time to arrange pickup.

If you have children in school, request transfer certificates and academic records now — most Dubai schools need a few weeks' notice to process these, and the new school will ask for them at enrollment. If you rent, check your notice period in your tenancy contract; most Dubai leases require 60-90 days' written notice to your landlord before moving out, so this is the week to send that notice if you haven't already.

Lock in your moving date and get written confirmation from your moving company, including what's included (packing materials, disassembly/reassembly of furniture, and whether your building's move-in/move-out permit is being arranged for you). This is also the week to start the DEWA transfer process — you'll need your Ejari for the new address to open a new account, and you'll want to schedule your final meter reading at the old address for your move-out date, not before.

If your new building requires a security deposit or NOC (No Objection Certificate) for moving, ask your building management now what documents they need — some towers require 48-72 hours' notice to book the service elevator or loading dock.

Start boxing anything you don't need in the next two weeks: out-of-season clothing, books, decor, spare linens, and garage or storage-room items. Label every box with its destination room and a general contents description — this is what actually saves time on move-in day, more than any packing technique.

If you're arranging your own cleaning for the old property (many Dubai tenancy contracts require the unit returned professionally cleaned to reclaim your deposit), book that now for a date after your furniture is out.

Call your moving company to reconfirm the date, arrival time, and crew size. Confirm the building access details for both properties — loading bay location, elevator booking reference if one was required, and any parking restrictions your movers' truck will need to work around.

Pack a separate essentials bag per family member: a few days of clothing, chargers, toiletries, medication, and any documents you'll need immediately (passports, Emirates ID, tenancy contract, school documents). Keep this bag with you rather than on the truck.

Do a final walkthrough of the old property together with your moving crew before they leave — check cupboards, the balcony, and any storage areas that are easy to forget. Take photos of the empty unit for your own records before handing back keys, especially if your deposit return depends on the property's condition.

At the new property, do a quick check of the delivered items against your inventory list before the crew leaves, so any issue is caught immediately rather than days later.

A few things are easy to forget once the boxes are unpacked: updating your address with your bank, insurance provider, and Emirates ID/visa records if applicable, registering your new Ejari if you haven't already, and setting up your Salik account or updating your vehicle registration address with the RTA if you've moved between emirates or major zones.
